Preface
of P. Stefano e M. Manelli
It is a difficult task to outline in a biography the events of an exceptional person’s life, whether it be a saint or a figure of great importance in human history. Generally, such individuals leave a mark, a path that guides others in making life less arduous and burdensome. Among these figures, some stand out for having provided guidance that became the fortune of nations, nourishing hopes for the fulfillment of the aspirations deeply rooted in human nature.
One only needs to recall Don Bosco, who discerned the signs of the times and showed young people the paths to follow—not only for acquiring a profession useful to society but also for reaching the Christian goal of a supernatural destiny, a goal worthy of any sacrifice.
Depicting the figure of Teresa Musco is equally challenging because, in her, the human aspects of natural gifts are intertwined with mysterious and extraordinary dimensions of such importance and significance that they can perplex even the most spiritually enlightened souls, those most endowed with exceptional gifts.
To grasp the human aspects of a cradle rocking in the poverty of a humble home, reminiscent of the grotto of Bethlehem; to perceive the omens of mysterious sufferings, akin to those that must have tormented the very soul of Christ during His life in Nazareth; to recognize in the body and spirit of Teresa the reenactment of the sufferings of Christ’s Passion—this is not merely the work of a historian who documents events but rather a task requiring mystical intuition, one that can only be supported by the most complete evidence.
Thus, the author of these pages is to be admired: he attempts to present, with freshness and immediacy, the human aspects of Teresa’s life—imbued with the extraordinary, at times even unsettling and disconcerting for unprepared souls.
Just as in Padre Pio, the extraordinary aspects of life alternate with natural ones that conceal God’s gifts, so too in Teresa Musco, the charismatic gifts are so profound that they seem to annul nature itself, immersing it in martyrdom through the repetition of Christ’s sorrowful and redemptive experiences. She relives the Passion, suffering in her home on Via Battistessa, assisted by individuals who, in a mysterious way, became her consolers in prayer—like the pious women and St. John at the foot of the Cross. She invokes the Mother, just as Jesus surely invoked His own while on the Cross.
She passed away at the age of 33, as Jesus had foretold.
The extraordinary nature of Teresa’s life is so immense that it will take years and enlightened minds to fully understand its value and significance. However, what remains for us is Teresa’s message to souls—a message of salvation through the Cross, addressed to all who vainly seek to escape suffering, only to find themselves inevitably pursued by it. Her final words before departing from this world resound with deep meaning:
“Blessed are we if we know how to suffer and offer everything to the Lord. Nothing is lost. The Lord keeps nothing for Himself, and He will know how to reward us for our sufferings.”
